ITEA Roots

Letter from Hilary Skellon

What an amazing 30 years it’s been! It’s hard to believe that ITEA has been thriving for nearly three decades. Those early days are still vivid—Sandy and Terry (right) planning the curriculum together, with Sandy having graduated only 18 months earlier.

Their passion laid the foundation for a school that has continued to evolve while staying true to its roots.

ITEA’s physical journey tells its own story of expansion and possibility. Classes first met in Sandy’s house in Boulder, as well as in local parks and libraries. As interest grew, we moved into a small purpose-built building in old town Louisville, outgrew that space, and relocated to 325 W. South Boulder Road. Our most recent transition—just across the street to 317 W. South Boulder Road—marks yet another exciting milestone in our evolution.

Our student community has transformed just as dramatically. In the early years, many students joined us as a second or even third career, often in their 40s to 60s. Today, it’s common to welcome students in their 20s, ready to dive into a rigorous field where graduate programs now require more credits than ever before. It’s inspiring to see how enthusiastically younger students are rising to meet the challenge.

Of course, the path hasn’t always been smooth. Achieving national accreditation in 2003 was a major accomplishment, and like any long journey, we’ve experienced our share of ups and downs.

But one thing has remained constant: the dedication of our faculty and administration.

Teaching itself has transformed, too. Gone are the days of notes and whiteboards alone. Today’s students are more kinesthetic, benefiting from early hands‑on learning, recorded lessons, point location videos, online courses, and dynamic in‑person sessions. Even with all these innovations, it’s remarkable—and deeply grounding—that the medicine we teach remains firmly rooted in the same natural laws that guided us when the school began.

As we celebrate this milestone year, we also celebrate the people who made it possible: our founders, our faculty, our staff, and the many students who have entrusted us with their education.

I’m so proud to have been associated with ITEA for so long! Here’s to the next 30 years of learning, growth, and connection.
